Welcome to the Newto News for September of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Fort Myers, Florida, named after Colonel Abraham Myers, was originally established as a military fort during the Seminole Wars in the early 19th century. The fort was built along the Caloosahatchee River to protect settlers from Native American attacks. In the late 1800s, Fort Myers began to flourish as a trading post and agricultural center, with citrus farming becoming a major industry. In the early 20th century, Fort Myers saw a boom in development as wealthy individuals, including Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, built winter homes in the area. The construction of the Tamiami Trail in the 1920s further connected Fort Myers to other parts of Florida, leading to increased tourism and population growth. Today, Fort Myers is a vibrant city known for its historic downtown district, beautiful beaches, and year-round warm weather. It continues to attract visitors and residents alike with its rich history and natural beauty.
