Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Fort Collins, Colorado was originally established as a military outpost in 1864 during the height of the Indian Wars. Named after Lieutenant Colonel William O. Collins, the fort served as a pivotal point in protecting settlers and travelers along the Overland Trail. As the threat of conflict with Native American tribes subsided, the fort transitioned into a thriving agricultural and trade hub. In the late 19th century, Fort Collins experienced a boom in population and economic growth with the arrival of the railroad. The establishment of Colorado Agricultural College (now Colorado State University) in 1870 further solidified the city’s reputation as a center for education and innovation. Throughout the 20th century, Fort Collins continued to evolve into a vibrant community known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, craft breweries, and cultural events. Today, Fort Collins is a bustling city with a strong sense of community and a rich history that is celebrated by residents and visitors alike.
