Fort Collins, Colorado was founded in 1864 as a military outpost during the Indian Wars. Named after Colonel William Collins, the fort served as protection for settlers and travelers along the Overland Trail. The city quickly grew in size and importance due to its strategic location near the Cache la Poudre River and the Rocky Mountains. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Fort Collins became a center for agriculture, particularly sugar beets and fruit production.
