Founded in 1783, Fayetteville, North Carolina, was named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French hero of the American Revolution. The city quickly became a hub of commerce and industry in the region due to its strategic location on the Cape Fear River. During the Civil War, Fayetteville played a significant role as a major Confederate arsenal and transportation hub. The city was occupied by Union forces in 1865, leading to the destruction of many of its buildings and infrastructure. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Fayetteville saw a resurgence in industrial growth, becoming known for its textiles and tobacco industries. The city also became a center for military activity with the establishment of Fort Bragg nearby. Today, Fayetteville continues to thrive as a diverse and vibrant community, with a strong military presence and a rich cultural heritage that is celebrated through events such as the International Folk Festival.
