Fayetteville, Arkansas was founded in 1828 by Thomas McCord, a farmer and land speculator. The city was named after General Fayetteville, a hero of the American Revolution. Situated in the northwest corner of the state, Fayetteville quickly grew into a bustling town due to its strategic location along the historic Butterfield Overland Mail Route. In the mid-19th century, the city became a major hub for transportation and trade, with stagecoaches and later the railroad passing through. During the Civil War, Fayetteville was occupied by both Confederate and Union forces at different times, causing significant destruction to the town. However, after the war, Fayetteville experienced a period of growth and prosperity, with the establishment of the University of Arkansas in 1871 bringing in new residents and businesses. Today, Fayetteville is a vibrant city known for its strong economy, cultural attractions, and outdoor recreational opportunities.
