Evansville, Indiana was founded in 1812 by Hugh McGary, a Welsh immigrant. Originally known as McGary’s Landing, the town quickly grew into a bustling river port along the Ohio River, attracting settlers looking to take advantage of the booming steamboat industry. In 1818, the town was officially renamed Evansville in honor of Robert Morgan Evans, one of the city’s early founders. Throughout the 19th century, Evansville continued to prosper as a major hub for transportation, manufacturing, and trade. The city played a key role in supplying Union forces during the Civil War and emerged as an important industrial center in the Midwest. In the 20th century, Evansville’s economy diversified with the growth of industries such as automotive manufacturing, healthcare, and education. Today, Evansville is known for its vibrant arts and cultural scene, historic architecture, and scenic riverfront. The city continues to thrive as a regional hub for commerce, education, and recreation.
