Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Founded in 1846 by Eugene Franklin Skinner, Eugene, Oregon began as a small settlement along the Willamette River. Originally named Skinner’s Mudhole, the town quickly grew due to its proximity to the new Oregon Trail and fertile farmland. In 1852, the city was officially incorporated and renamed Eugene in honor of its founder. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Eugene developed into a thriving hub for agriculture, logging, and manufacturing industries. The arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s further fueled the city’s growth and connected it to markets across the country. In the 1960s, Eugene became known for its counterculture and environmental activism, playing a key role in the nascent environmental movement. Today, Eugene is a vibrant city with a diverse economy that includes technology, healthcare, and education sectors. It is also home to the University of Oregon, bringing a youthful energy to the city and contributing to its reputation as a center for arts, culture, and outdoor recreation.
