Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Founded in 1701 by French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, Detroit, Michigan, quickly became a strategic trading post and military stronghold due to its location along the Detroit River. The city’s growth rapidly increased in the 19th century with the completion of the Erie Canal, leading to a boom in manufacturing and transportation industries. Detroit became known as the “Motor City” in the early 20th century, as it was home to the headquarters of the major automobile manufacturers Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler. However, the city faced economic challenges with the decline of the auto industry in the latter half of the century, leading to urban decay and population loss. In recent years, Detroit has experienced a revitalization, with efforts to restore its historic neighborhoods and attract new businesses and residents to the city. Today, Detroit is a vibrant hub of culture, arts, and innovation, with a rich history that continues to shape its identity and growth.
