Founded in 1796 by George and William Dayton, Dayton, Ohio quickly became known as a bustling hub of industry and innovation. The city’s location along the Miami and Mad rivers made it an ideal spot for milling and manufacturing, leading to rapid growth in the 19th century. By the early 20th century, Dayton had established itself as a leader in aviation, thanks to pioneers like the Wright brothers who conducted their first successful flight in nearby Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. During World War II, Dayton’s factories transitioned to support the war effort, producing everything from bombers to tanks. The post-war period saw continued growth and development, with industries diversifying into fields like healthcare and technology. Today, Dayton is home to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, one of the largest military installations in the country, as well as numerous institutions of higher education and a vibrant arts and cultural scene.
