Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Davenport, Iowa was founded in 1836 by Antoine LeClaire, a French-Canadian fur trader, who named the city after his friend, George Davenport. Situated along the Mississippi River, Davenport quickly became a prominent trading hub for the region. In the mid-19th century, the city experienced rapid growth thanks to its strategic location along the river and the development of the railroad system. Davenport became known for its manufacturing industry, particularly in the production of agricultural machinery and tools. Throughout the years, Davenport has faced several challenges, including natural disasters such as floods and tornadoes. However, the city has always shown resilience and determination to rebuild and grow stronger. Today, Davenport is a thriving city with a diverse economy, vibrant arts scene, and strong sense of community. Its rich history and cultural heritage continue to be celebrated and preserved by its residents.
