Welcome to the Newto News for July of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Davenport, Iowa, located on the Mississippi River, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1836 by Antoine Le Claire. The city was named after Colonel George Davenport, a fur trader and friend of Le Claire. Davenport quickly grew into a bustling river port and trading center due to its prime location along the waterway. In the late 19th century, Davenport experienced a population boom as immigrants from Germany, Sweden, and Ireland settled in the city to work in the booming industries of lumber, milling, and agriculture. The city became known for its manufacturing capabilities, producing everything from farm equipment to beer. Davenport also played a significant role in the Civil War, supplying troops and materials to the Union Army. In the early 20th century, Davenport continued to thrive as a manufacturing hub, attracting more residents and businesses to the area. Today, Davenport is a thriving city with a diverse economy, vibrant arts scene, and strong sense of community pride.
