Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Davenport, Iowa was founded in 1836 by Antoine Le Claire, a French-Canadian fur trader, and named after his friend, George Davenport. The city quickly grew into a bustling river town, thanks to its prime location on the Mississippi River. In the mid-19th century, Davenport became a hub for the lumber industry, as logs were floated down the river from the north. By the late 1800s, Davenport had developed into a major industrial center, with factories producing everything from farm machinery to beer. The city also became a prominent transportation hub, with railroads connecting Davenport to the rest of the country. In the 20th century, Davenport continued to thrive, even during the Great Depression. The city’s economy diversified, with the healthcare and education sectors becoming increasingly important. Today, Davenport is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, beautiful riverfront parks, and historic architecture. It remains a thriving city with a rich history and promising future.
