Welcome to the Newto News for February of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Davenport, Iowa was founded in 1836 by Antoine LeClaire, a fur trader and land speculator. The city was named after George Davenport, a colonel in the Black Hawk War and a successful businessman. Davenport quickly became a major center of commerce along the Mississippi River, with its location making it an ideal hub for transportation of goods. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Davenport experienced a period of rapid growth and industrialization, with industries such as lumber, milling, and foundries contributing to its economic prosperity. The city also became known for its cultural institutions, including the Davenport Public Library and the Figge Art Museum. Today, Davenport is a vibrant city with a diverse economy, including healthcare, education, and manufacturing. It is also a popular tourist destination, known for its historic architecture, scenic riverfront, and annual festivals. Davenport continues to grow and thrive, while preserving its rich history and heritage.
