Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Corvallis, Oregon was founded in 1845 by Joseph C. Avery, a merchant who saw the potential for a thriving community along the Willamette River. Originally called Marysville, the town was later renamed Corvallis in 1853, a name derived from the Latin word for “heart of the valley.” Throughout its history, Corvallis has been known for its strong agricultural industry, particularly in the production of wheat, fruit, and timber. The establishment of Oregon State University in 1868 further solidified Corvallis as a center for education and research. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Corvallis experienced rapid growth and development, spurred by the arrival of the railroad and an influx of new residents seeking opportunities in the booming economy. Today, Corvallis remains a vibrant community with a rich history, innovative spirit, and strong commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation.
