Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Nestled in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the city of Corvallis has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. Founded in 1845 by Joseph C. Avery, the city was originally named “Marysville” after Avery’s wife. In 1853, the city was renamed Corvallis, which is Latin for “heart of the valley.” Corvallis quickly grew into a thriving agricultural community, with wheat, hops, and fruit crops becoming staples of the local economy. The city also became known for its timber industry, thanks to the abundance of Douglas fir trees in the surrounding forests. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Corvallis developed a reputation as a center for education and cultural activities. Oregon State University was established in 1868, bringing a diverse array of scholars and students to the area. Today, Corvallis continues to thrive as a vibrant and welcoming community, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, education, and innovation.
