Welcome to the Newto News for July of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Located along the Chattahoochee River, Columbus, Georgia has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1828. Named after Christopher Columbus, the city quickly became a hub for trade and commerce due to its strategic location on the river. In the mid-19th century, Columbus was a major center for the cotton trade, attracting wealth and growth to the area. During the Civil War, Columbus was a key industrial center for the Confederacy, producing war materials and textiles for the troops. After the war, the city saw a period of reconstruction and development, with industries such as textiles, iron production, and lumber driving the economy. In the 20th century, Columbus continued to grow and diversify its economy, becoming known for its military presence with Fort Benning nearby. Today, Columbus is a vibrant city with a blend of historic architecture, cultural attractions, and outdoor recreational opportunities along the riverfront.
