Welcome to the Newto News for February of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Founded in 1828, Columbus, Georgia has a long and rich history. Originally inhabited by Creek Indians, the area was later settled by European pioneers seeking new opportunities in the burgeoning cotton industry. In the years leading up to the Civil War, Columbus became a major hub for trade and transportation, thanks to its prime location along the Chattahoochee River. During the war, Columbus played a crucial role as a manufacturing center for the Confederate States, producing weapons, uniforms, and other supplies for the Southern army. After the war, the city experienced a period of rapid growth and industrialization, becoming known for its ironworks and textile mills. Today, Columbus is a vibrant city with a diverse economy and a strong sense of community. Its historic district preserves many of the city’s original buildings, while modern developments and cultural attractions continue to draw visitors from near and far. Columbus remains a symbol of the South’s resilience and spirit of innovation.
