Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Columbus, Georgia was founded in 1828 and named after the famous explorer Christopher Columbus. The city quickly became a major economic hub due to its location on the Chattahoochee River, which provided easy access for trade and transportation. During the Civil War, Columbus was a strategic center for the Confederate Army, and the city was heavily damaged by Union forces during the Battle of Columbus in 1865. Despite the destruction, Columbus recovered quickly and continued to grow as a important industrial and commercial center in the region. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Columbus experienced a boom in its textile and iron industries, further solidifying its status as an economic powerhouse in the South. The city also became known for its military presence, with Fort Benning being established nearby. Today, Columbus is a vibrant city with a rich history, diverse economy, and thriving arts and cultural scene. It continues to be a vital center for commerce, education, and tourism in Georgia.
