Welcome to the Newto News for September of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Columbia, South Carolina was founded in 1786 and named after Christopher Columbus. Originally chosen as the site of the new state capital due to its central location in the state, the city quickly grew in importance as a center of politics, commerce, and education. During the Civil War, Columbia was occupied by Union troops and suffered widespread destruction when General William Tecumseh Sherman’s forces set fire to the city in 1865. The city slowly rebuilt in the years following the war, eventually emerging as a hub for industry and trade in the region. In the 20th century, Columbia experienced significant growth and modernization, becoming known for its vibrant cultural scene, historic neighborhoods, and leading universities such as the University of South Carolina. Today, Columbia continues to thrive as a diverse and dynamic city, with a strong economy and a rich heritage that is celebrated through its many museums, festivals, and events.
