Welcome to the Newto News for February of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Columbia, South Carolina, named after Christopher Columbus, was founded in 1786 to serve as the capital of the newly formed state. The city quickly grew in size and importance due to its strategic location in the center of the state and along the Congaree River. During the Civil War, Columbia was an important supply center for the Confederacy and was targeted by Union forces. In February 1865, General Sherman’s troops captured and burned the city, destroying much of its infrastructure and leaving thousands homeless. In the years following the war, Columbia was rebuilt and experienced rapid growth as a center for agriculture, industry, and education. It became known for its cotton mills and textile industry, as well as its universities and colleges. Today, Columbia is a thriving city known for its historic landmarks, vibrant arts scene, and diverse culture. It continues to attract new residents and visitors with its rich history and modern amenities.
