Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Columbia, Missouri was founded in 1821 as the county seat of Boone County. The city was named after Christopher Columbus and was strategically located in the center of the state, making it an ideal location for trade and commerce. Originally a small trading post, Columbia quickly grew into a bustling town with the arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century. During the Civil War, Columbia was the site of several skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces, but ultimately remained under Union control. After the war, the city experienced a period of rapid growth and prosperity with the establishment of the University of Missouri in 1839. The university brought an influx of students and faculty, solidifying Columbia’s reputation as an educational and cultural center. Today, Columbia is known for its vibrant arts scene, historic downtown district, and diverse population. It continues to thrive as a thriving hub of education, innovation, and community.
