Columbia, Missouri was founded in 1821 as the site for a new state university, which would later become the University of Missouri. The town was named after Christopher Columbus and quickly grew into a bustling hub of education and commerce. During the Civil War, Columbia was the site of a pivotal battle, as Union forces clashed with Confederate troops in 1864. The town was left in ruins, but quickly rebuilt in the years following the war. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Columbia experienced a period of rapid growth and prosperity, as the university expanded and new industries emerged. The town became known for its thriving agriculture and manufacturing sectors. Today, Columbia is a vibrant and diverse city, known for its historic architecture, lively arts scene, and numerous parks and recreational opportunities. It continues to be a center for education and research, with the University of Missouri remaining a key institution in the community.
