Clearwater, Florida was founded in 1823 by Odet Philippe, a Frenchman who settled in the area and established a plantation. The city was originally known as Clear Water Harbor due to the crystal-clear waters of the nearby bay. Throughout the 19th century, Clearwater grew as a small fishing village and port town, attracting settlers and businesses to the area. In the early 20th century, Clearwater experienced a tourism boom as visitors flocked to the city for its warm climate and beautiful beaches. The construction of the Belleview Biltmore Hotel in 1897 solidified Clearwater’s reputation as a premier destination for vacationers.
