Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Chicago, Illinois, known as the “Windy City,” has a rich and vibrant history dating back to the early 1800s. Originally inhabited by indigenous tribes such as the Potawatomi, the area was settled by European explorers and fur traders in the late 18th century. In 1833, the town of Chicago was officially incorporated, and its location on Lake Michigan made it a strategic hub for transportation and trade. The city rapidly grew in the mid-19th century, fueled by the construction of railroads and the opening of the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Chicago became a major industrial center, attracting immigrants from Europe and African Americans from the South seeking economic opportunities. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city continued to flourish, becoming a major cultural and political center. Today, Chicago is a diverse and bustling metropolis, known for its iconic architecture, world-class museums, vibrant music and arts scene, and passionate sports fans.
