Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Charlottesville, Virginia, named after Queen Charlotte of England, was founded in 1762. Originally inhabited by Monacan Native Americans, the area was settled by European colonists in the early 18th century. The city quickly grew due to its location at the intersection of major transportation routes, including the James River and Kanawha Canal and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. Charlottesville played a pivotal role in the American Revolutionary War, serving as a center for supplies and support for the Continental Army. In 1819, the University of Virginia was founded by Thomas Jefferson, adding to the city’s prestige and intellectual life. During the Civil War, Charlottesville was briefly occupied by Union forces, leading to the burning of the University of Virginia’s Rotunda. In the years following the war, the city experienced significant growth and development, becoming a hub for education, culture, and commerce in central Virginia. Today, Charlottesville is known for its historic architecture, vibrant arts scene, and prestigious university, attracting visitors and residents alike to its charming streets and picturesque countryside.
