Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Charlotte, North Carolina was founded in 1768 by Thomas Polk, a surveyor and military officer. Originally known as Charlotte Towne, the city was named in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the wife of King George III of England. Charlotte quickly became a major trading center due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major Native American trading paths. In the late 18th century, the discovery of gold in the nearby Reed Gold Mine sparked a gold rush in the region, further boosting the city’s economy. During the Civil War, Charlotte served as a major Confederate stronghold and played a significant role in the Southern war effort. After the war, the city experienced rapid growth and became a major financial center in the South. Today, Charlotte is a bustling city known for its thriving banking industry, vibrant arts scene, and diverse cultural offerings. It is also home to several professional sports teams and has a growing reputation as a technology hub.
