Charleston, West Virginia was founded in 1788 and named after Charles Clendenin, one of the first settlers in the area. The city quickly grew as a trading hub due to its location along the Kanawha River, which was a vital transportation route for goods heading westward. During the Civil War, Charleston played a strategic role as both Union and Confederate forces sought to control the region. The city was heavily damaged during the conflict, but was rebuilt in the years following the war. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Charleston became known for its thriving coal industry, with companies like the Kanawha and Hocking Coal and Coke Company dominating the local economy. The city also became a center for government and education, with the state Capitol building and several colleges and universities calling Charleston home.
