Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Cedar Rapids, Iowa was founded in 1838 by Osgood Shepherd, a prominent land speculator, and was originally named Rapids City due to the nearby Cedar River rapids. The city quickly became a hub for the timber industry, with several sawmills and a booming economy that attracted settlers from all over the region. In 1871, the city was renamed Cedar Rapids to distinguish it from another Rapids City in Illinois. By the late 19th century, Cedar Rapids had grown into a major industrial center, with businesses specializing in food processing, foundries, and farming equipment. The city’s economy continued to thrive in the early 20th century, as it became known for its production of Quaker Oats and the meatpacking industry. Today, Cedar Rapids is a thriving cultural and economic hub in Iowa, with a vibrant arts scene, diverse population, and strong manufacturing and technology sectors. The city is also known for its beautiful parks, historic architecture, and strong sense of community.
