Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Cedar Rapids, Iowa was founded in 1838 by Osgood Shepherd, a land speculator who saw the potential for growth in the area due to its location along the Cedar River. The city quickly became a hub for industry, with lumber, grain milling, and railroad transportation playing key roles in its development. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Cedar Rapids experienced a population boom as immigrants from Europe and rural America flocked to the city in search of work. The city’s economy diversified, with manufacturing, food processing, and technology industries flourishing. Cedar Rapids faced challenges in the early 2000s when devastating floods ravaged the city, causing widespread damage to homes and businesses. However, the community came together to rebuild and revitalize the city, leading to a resurgence in economic growth and development. Today, Cedar Rapids is a thriving city with a strong sense of community and a vibrant arts and cultural scene. Its rich history and resilient spirit continue to shape its identity as a welcoming and dynamic place to live, work, and visit.
