Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

The Bronx, located in New York City, has a rich history that dates back to the early 17th century when it was inhabited by the Lenape Native American tribe. In 1639, the area was settled by Dutch farmer Jonas Bronck, after whom the Bronx is named. Throughout the 19th century, the Bronx developed as a rural area with farms, estates, and villages. In the early 20th century, the Bronx experienced a population boom as immigrants from Europe, particularly Irish, Italian, Jewish, and African American communities, flocked to the area in search of new opportunities. The construction of the Third Avenue Elevated train line in the late 19th century also played a key role in the Bronx’s development as a bustling urban center. By the mid-20th century, the Bronx had become a vibrant and diverse borough known for its cultural institutions, such as the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden. However, the Bronx also faced challenges such as housing discrimination, poverty, and urban decay in the 1970s and 1980s. In recent years, the Bronx has undergone revitalization efforts, with the creation of new housing developments, parks, and cultural attractions. Today, the Bronx is a thriving borough with a vibrant arts scene, diverse communities, and a rich history that continues to be celebrated and preserved.
