Blacksburg, Virginia was founded in 1798 and named after Colonel William Black, a prominent landowner in the area. The town quickly grew as a stop along the Great Buffalo Trace, a major trade route used by Native Americans and early settlers. In the mid-19th century, Blacksburg became known as a center for education with the establishment of the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) in 1872. During the Civil War, Blacksburg was largely spared from major battles but experienced significant economic hardship due to its proximity to the conflict. In the late 19th century, the town experienced a period of growth with the expansion of the railroad and the establishment of several industries. Today, Blacksburg is a vibrant college town known for its strong sense of community, beautiful natural surroundings, and thriving arts and cultural scene.
