Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Birmingham, Alabama was founded in 1871 by a group of entrepreneurs who saw the potential for growth in the area due to its abundant natural resources, including coal, iron ore, and limestone. The city quickly became known as the “Magic City” for its rapid development and explosive growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The construction of railroads and the growth of the iron and steel industries in Birmingham attracted thousands of immigrants and African Americans seeking work in the bustling city. However, this rapid industrialization also led to poor working conditions, racial tensions, and labor strikes. Throughout the 20th century, Birmingham played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement, with notable events such as the Birmingham Campaign and the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing highlighting the city’s struggles with racial inequality. Today, Birmingham is a thriving city known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, diverse population, and strong sense of community pride.
