Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Billings, Montana was founded in 1882 as a railroad town along the Northern Pacific Railway. Named after Frederick H. Billings, the president of the railroad company, the town quickly grew into a thriving community due to its strategic location as a transportation hub for the surrounding area. By the early 20th century, Billings had become known as the “Magic City” for its rapid growth and prosperity. The discovery of oil in the nearby fields further fueled the city’s development, attracting more residents and businesses to the area. Throughout the years, Billings has weathered economic ups and downs, including the Great Depression and the decline of the railroad industry. However, the city has continually reinvented itself, diversifying its economy to include healthcare, agriculture, and tourism. Today, Billings is the largest city in Montana, known for its vibrant arts scene, outdoor recreation opportunities, and strong sense of community pride. Its rich history and Western charm continue to attract visitors and residents alike.
