Welcome to the Newto News for September of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Beaumont, Texas was founded in 1835 by businessman Henry Millard and was named after his wife’s maiden name. The city quickly grew as a major center for the lumber industry thanks to its proximity to the dense forests of the East Texas Piney Woods. By the late 19th century, Beaumont had become one of the wealthiest cities in Texas, with a booming economy driven by timber and oil. In 1901, the discovery of oil at the nearby Spindletop oil field sparked a massive oil boom that transformed Beaumont into a major oil refining and petrochemical hub. The city’s population exploded as workers flocked to the area in search of jobs in the oil industry. Despite facing economic downturns in the mid-20th century, Beaumont has continued to thrive as a diverse and vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage. Today, it is known for its historic downtown area, museums, festivals, and outdoor recreational opportunities along the nearby Gulf Coast.
