Baton Rouge, Louisiana, located along the eastern bank of the Mississippi River, has a rich history dating back to the early 18th century. The city was first settled by French explorers in 1699 and named “Baton Rouge” meaning “Red Stick” in French, after a red pole marking the boundary between two Native American tribes. Throughout its history, Baton Rouge has been a hub for culture, commerce, and politics in Louisiana. It played a significant role in the American Civil War, serving as the state capital of the Confederacy from 1862 to 1865. After the war, the city experienced rapid growth and development, becoming an important center for the petrochemical industry in the 20th century. Today, Baton Rouge is a vibrant and diverse city, known for its unique blend of French, Spanish, African, and Creole influences. It is home to Louisiana State University, numerous historic landmarks, and a thriving arts and entertainment scene.
