Welcome to the Newto News for July of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Baltimore, Maryland, was founded in 1729 and named after the second Baron Baltimore, Cecil Calvert, who was the first Proprietor and Proprietary Governor of the Province of Maryland. The city quickly grew into a bustling port, playing a significant role in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. During the War of 1812, Baltimore was successfully defended against British bombardment, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Baltimore became known for its manufacturing industry, particularly in the production of steel, textiles, and shipping. The city also played a vital role in the civil rights movement, with key events such as the desegregation of schools and the work of activists like Thurgood Marshall and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Today, Baltimore is a thriving metropolis known for its historic neighborhoods, vibrant arts scene, and world-renowned institutions such as Johns Hopkins University.
