Bakersfield, California, originally inhabited by the Yokuts Native American tribe, was first settled by American settlers in the mid-19th century. The city was officially founded in 1869 by Thomas Baker, who established a bakery and a small settlement that would eventually grow into the thriving metropolis it is today.
