Bakersfield, California, has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century when it was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Yokuts and Kawaiisu people. The city was named after Colonel Thomas Baker, who established a small settlement in the area in 1863. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Bakersfield grew rapidly due to the discovery of oil in the nearby Kern River oil field.
