Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Bakersfield, California was founded in 1869 by Colonel Thomas Baker, a local landowner who established the town as a stop along the new Southern Pacific Railroad line. The city quickly grew as agriculture became prosperous in the area, with farmers producing crops such as cotton, alfalfa, and citrus fruit. In the early 20th century, oil was discovered in the surrounding area, leading to a boom in the local economy and further population growth. During the Great Depression, Bakersfield suffered like many other cities, but managed to recover thanks to the construction of the nearby Vandenberg Air Force Base during World War II. The city continued to grow in the post-war years, becoming a hub for country music and agriculture in California’s Central Valley. Today, Bakersfield is a thriving city with a diverse economy, known for its rich history, cultural attractions, and vibrant community.
