Bakersfield, California has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century when it was founded by Colonel Thomas Baker, a lawyer and politician who named the town after himself. Initially a small agricultural community, Bakersfield experienced rapid growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to its strategic location along the Southern Pacific Railroad and the discovery of oil in the area.
