Originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Tonkawa and Comanche, Austin, Texas was founded in 1839 and named after Stephen F. Austin, known as the “Father of Texas.” The city quickly grew into a major center for government and education in the state, serving as the capital of the Republic of Texas before eventually becoming the capital of the state in 1846.
