Aurora, Colorado, was founded in the 1880s as a small town on the plains east of Denver. Originally named Fletcher, it was renamed Aurora in 1907 after the Roman goddess of the dawn. The city quickly grew as a result of its strategic location along the Denver-Aurora-Douglas County Toll Road and the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century. Aurora became a major hub for agriculture, with large farms producing crops such as wheat, barley, and sugar beets. The city also saw an influx of residents during World War II when the nearby Buckley Air Force Base was established. In the second half of the 20th century, Aurora experienced rapid suburbanization and population growth, leading to the development of new residential neighborhoods and commercial centers. Today, Aurora is the third-largest city in Colorado and is known for its cultural diversity, outdoor recreation opportunities, and thriving economy.
