Atlantic City, New Jersey, was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native American tribe before being discovered by European settlers in the early 16th century. The city’s development truly began in the mid-19th century when it became a popular seaside resort destination, known for its beautiful beaches and luxurious hotels. In 1870, the first boardwalk was constructed in Atlantic City, becoming one of the first in the country and solidifying its reputation as a premier vacation spot. The city experienced a tourism boom in the early 20th century with the introduction of the Miss America Pageant in 1921, which brought even more visitors to the area. However, Atlantic City faced economic decline in the latter half of the 20th century due to the rise of competing gambling destinations and changing vacation trends. Despite this, efforts to revitalize the city have been ongoing, with new developments and attractions being added to attract visitors and boost the local economy. Today, Atlantic City remains a popular tourist destination, known for its vibrant entertainment scene and iconic boardwalk.
