Welcome to the Newto News for September of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Atlanta, Georgia was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Creek and Cherokee. The city was founded in 1837 as a transportation hub at the intersection of two railway lines, and its strategic location contributed to its rapid growth. During the Civil War, Atlanta played a crucial role as a major supply and logistics center for the Confederate Army, and was the target of General Sherman’s infamous “March to the Sea” in 1864, which left much of the city in ruins. In the years following the war, Atlanta began to rebuild and recover, becoming a major center for commerce and industry in the South. The city experienced rapid population growth, aided by the construction of the state capitol building in 1889 and the hosting of the Cotton States and International Exposition in 1895. Throughout the 20th century, Atlanta continued to grow and diversify, becoming a hub for civil rights activism and the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Today, Atlanta is a vibrant and bustling metropolis with a thriving economy, diverse cultural scene, and rich history.
