Welcome to the Newto News for September of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Anchorage, Alaska, was originally inhabited by the Dena’ina people for thousands of years before Russian explorers arrived in the area in the late 18th century. The Russians established a trading post in the area, but it wasn’t until the United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 that Anchorage began to grow as a city. Anchorage became a booming hub for gold miners during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city experienced rapid growth and development as a result, with the completion of the Alaska Railroad in 1923 further boosting Anchorage’s economy. During World War II, Anchorage became a key military base for the United States, playing a crucial role in the transportation of troops and supplies to the Soviet Union. In the post-war era, Anchorage continued to grow and diversify its economy, becoming a thriving cultural and economic center in Alaska. Today, Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska and serves as a gateway to the natural wonders of the state, attracting tourists from around the world with its stunning scenery and outdoor recreational opportunities.
