Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Anchorage, Alaska was originally inhabited by the Dena’ina Athabascan people for thousands of years before Russian explorers arrived in the area in the late 18th century. The Russians established a trading post called “Russian Alaska” before selling Alaska to the United States in 1867. The city of Anchorage was officially founded in 1914 as a construction port for the Alaska Railroad. The population grew rapidly during the construction boom, attracting settlers from all over the United States. Anchorage became the transportation hub for the territory, linking the rest of Alaska to the lower 48 states. During World War II, Anchorage played a crucial role as a military base and staging area for troops and supplies heading to the Pacific front. After the war, the city experienced another population boom with the discovery of oil in Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope. Today, Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska and serves as the economic and cultural center of the state. It is known for its stunning natural landscapes, outdoor recreational opportunities, and unique blend of indigenous and modern culture.
