Welcome to the Newto News for June of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Anchorage, Alaska, traces its roots back to the indigenous Dena’ina people who have inhabited the area for thousands of years. It wasn’t until the late 19th century when the United States purchased Alaska from Russia that the city began to take shape. In 1914, construction of the Alaska Railroad brought an influx of settlers and Anchorage was officially established as a tent city. Anchorage quickly grew into a thriving hub for transportation, commerce, and military activity during World War II. The military presence continued to influence the city with the establishment of Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson. In the latter half of the 20th century, Anchorage experienced rapid growth due to the discovery of oil in Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope. The city became a vital center for the oil industry and experienced an economic boom. Today, Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska and serves as the cultural, economic, and transportation hub for the state. Its stunning natural surroundings and vibrant community make Anchorage a unique and dynamic city.
