Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Anchorage, Alaska, was originally inhabited by the Dena’ina Athabascan people for thousands of years before Russian explorers arrived in the area in the early 1700s. The city’s modern history began in 1914 when it was founded as a railroad construction port for the Alaska Railroad. The city quickly grew in population and economic importance, becoming the largest city in the state. During World War II, Anchorage played a crucial role as a military base for the United States Army and Air Force. The city was also a key hub for supplying the war effort in the Pacific. After the war, Anchorage continued to develop as a major transportation and economic center, attracting immigrants and businesses from around the world. Today, Anchorage is known for its stunning natural beauty, with the Chugach Mountains and Cook Inlet providing a picturesque backdrop to the bustling city. It is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide range of activities such as hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Anchorage remains a vital economic and cultural hub for Alaska, with a diverse population and thriving economy.
