Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Albany, New York, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1614 by Dutch traders and fur trappers. Originally named Fort Orange, it quickly became a bustling trading post and strategic military outpost along the Hudson River. In 1664, the English took control of Albany and renamed it after the Duke of Albany, who would later become King James II. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Albany grew into a major center for trade and transportation, thanks to its location at the intersection of the Erie Canal and several major railroads. During the American Revolutionary War, Albany played a significant role as the meeting place for the Albany Congress, where Benjamin Franklin proposed the Albany Plan of Union. The city also served as the state capital of New York from 1797 to 1799, before moving to its current location in Albany in 1799. Today, Albany is a vibrant city known for its historic architecture, cultural institutions, and as the capital of New York State.
